Women Who Launch - For Whom Failure is Impossible Failure is Impossible As a 1950s housewife my mother was âa woman who lunched.â The Mrs. So-and Sos-who went by their spousesâ first and last names- were unable to pursue careers. The mindset of the era was a wife who worked meant her husband was a poor provider; a bank- issued paper bearing the words: PAY TO THE ORDER OF were an attack on his masculinity. Moreover, the little ladyâs real job was in the PTA, the kitchen, the bedroom. And so she lunched. Estee Lauder Mercifully, because of trailblazing feminists, Stepford wives were allowed to shed their ankle bracelets, to have a life more encompassing than suds in the city. Thus they morphed into the women who launched-instead of waiting for a glass slipper they shattered glass ceilings. One of these, Josephine Esther Mentzer, began life in an apartment over her Hungarian fatherâs hardware store in Queens. Armed with her uncleâs cold creams and her own innate chutzpah, she reinvented herself into the cosmetic queen Estee Lauder. Among her roster of friends and clients were Princesses Grace and Diana, First Lady Nancy Reagan, and the Duchess of Windsor. When she passed the torch to her sons-the Kennedyâs of the beauty world-she left them a legacy of billions. Her son Ronald Lauderâs $135 million purchase of Klimptâs world-famous painting Woman in Gold, a luxurious fin de siècle icon from her fatherâs native Hungary, would have met with her smile of approval. Similarly, Estee would have nodded her head-always perfectly coiffed-at her daughter-in-law Evelynâs pink ribbon campaign, which became the ubiquitous symbol of the battle against breast cancer. Sara Blakely To historians the Battle of the Bulge is a chapter in the story of World War II; to others, it is a fight against ever-expanding waistlines. And, to an enterprising lady, it presented opportunity. Her slimming of America made her a modern Midas, with a fortune built on body issues. Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, âBuild a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.â Sara Blakely, the woman who launched a Spandex mousetrap, was going to a summer party and wanted to debut a pair of slacks. The problem was that although her size- two body looked svelte in the garment, she was not thrilled with the faux pas of the dreaded VPL-visible panty line. She felt that other attendees need not be privy as to whether her underpants were bikini, thong, or granny. Unable to purchase any product that would give her a smooth look, she made her own. Spandex-that made her Forbes worthy-has been good to Ms. Blakely, whose empireâs slogan is, âChanging the world one butt at a time.â Arianna Huffington When one thinks of the newspapers of yesteryear, the image that comes to mind is men with ink-stained fingers bending over their printing presses. And the media tycoons behind the scenes cast the giant shadows of Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. In the contemporary era, the formerly testosterone-fueled media has been impacted by Greek-born Arianna Huffington. On a shoestring budget she launched the eponymous Huffington Post, subsequently sold to AOL for $315 million. As a well-connected wielder of political clout-she has the world leaders on her smartphoneâs speed dial-if angered she can huff and puff. Whitney Wolfe Jane Austenâs Pride and Prejudice famously begins, âIt is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.â Alas, this observation is 50 shades of wishful thinking and hence the $2.4 billion online dating industry. Enter Bumble. Whitney Wolfe was twenty-three when she co-founded the smartphone app Tinder. When her partners forced her resignation-with a one million payoff-she decided to launch her own female-run company. Bumble created a huge buzz and Ms. Wolfe appeared on Forbes â30 Under 30.â Itâs good to be Queen. Backwards, and in high heels The female pioneers deserve all accolades, especially as they had to pull themselves up by their bootstraps-or, in their case, 1950s black pumps. Their difficulty in leveling the playing-field can be illustrated a by quotation by Bob Thanes in his Los Angeles comic strip Frank and Ernest. The friends are gazing at a billboard announcing a Fred Astaire film festival with the accompanying caption. âSure he was great, but donât forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he didbackwards and in high heels.â Although in the socioeconomic seesaw girls are still in the air, gender equality is on the horizon. However, in the words of Dylan, âthe times they are a changing.â And they are doing so because of ladies who do not sit well in the backseat. We can take succor from the women who made it possible for âthe weaker sexâ to partake in the arena of the ballot box. Susan Brownell Anthony, on her deathbed at her Rochester home, told her friend that it âseems so cruelâ to die without seeing her suffrage dream come to fruition. It was her fate to be a Moses, denied entry into the Promised Land. Yet her spirit remained indefatigable. This can be quite a laborious task for anyone doing temporarily, but if you are doing this day in and day out, all year around, how often would you actually take the necessary time to read a resume all the way to the bottom? Not often Im sure. Not every resume makes it into the yes pile, but those that do will go on to be read from top to bottom in the second stage of the recruitment process. When you are applying for what is potentially your dream job, you will want to do everything in your power to have your resume read right to the very end. By understanding how an employer looks through a resume, you will be able to improve your odds of having your resume read completely.Short and SweetEveryone has heard the tried and tested advice to keep things short and sweet. Nowhere is this advice more important than with your resume. Imagine the reaction you would get from an employer when faced with your resume that is five pages long. Do you really think they will be encouraged to even get past the first page? Probably not.An employer will be quite time-restricted with searching through resumes and job applications. They dont want to sit there for hours on end every day sifting through applicants, so longer resumes are not going to grab their attention. Long resumes can be very overwhelming, especially if they pick one up to look at after four or five hours of sorting through applicants. It really doesnt matter that the information contained on page four is absolutely outstanding, the employer is probably never going to reach that page.Try to keep your resume short. About one or two pages long is fine for most employers to scan over and pick out the information they are looking for. If there are very few at first glance, then you need to up your keyword count to include more within your resume text.Look for the most common keywords that the company uses in their job descriptions and incorporate those keywords into your own resume. Make them easy to spot by highlighting them in a separate skills box with a bold, eye-catching section heading. The job advert the c ompany are posting tells you exactly what that employer is looking for, so try your best to pick out your matching skills, experience and qualifications and present them in a way that makes them easy to spot. Remember that you are trying to grab their attention and show them that you have the necessary skills they desire.Explain why you want this jobOnce you have highlighted all your matching skills, knowledge and work experience and placed them at the top of your resume, you will want to keep the employer engaged and reading further.Rather than simply going onto listing your qualifications or listing other information that is not directly related to the role on offer, write a short paragraph to make it perfectly clear why you want this job. Let People Know Youre Human - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Last week, I was almost finished getting ready to go out with friends when I had a moment of pure horror. Not the kind from scary movies, the kind of horror that only occurs when you look in the mirror 10 minutes before a friend is supposed to pick you up and realize your hair is purple. Earlier that day, Id had a brilliant idea in the shower and dashed out (with purple conditioner in hair) to write it down before rinsing. That (apparently) was a BAD idea. So, with a friend due to arrive at any moment, I sprinted back to the shower and desperately tried to undo the catastrophe on my head. I only made one stop on the way: to send out a quick tweet about it. Why did I do that? Not because I document every second of my life on Twitter (I dont). I did it because accidentally dying my hair purple is pretty darn ridiculous and I thought someone would probably get a kick out of it. (And they did!) Be real be you So many people out there try to be so perfect online. They keep their online profiles clean of any potentially-incriminating details and go over everything 500 times before they hit publish. They airbrush their online persona and keep up the professional veneer at all times.I can understand that. With so much potentially at stake, you want your online presence to be as travel-brochure-perfect as possible. No dirty pools or cloudy skies, right? Except no one actually is perfect. We all have bad hair days and failures. We all say the wrong thing at times, and create chaos. Everyone knows that perfection is a myth. Now, Im not telling you to go wild and hang your dirty laundry all over your website or Facebook profile. We dont need to see the picture of you chugging beer at a college frat party without your clothes on. And its not a good idea to completely eliminate the censure from your writings. You still do have to have respect for your personal brand. But you should admit youre human online. Dont be afraid to put up pictures of yourself out with friends or drenched in sweat after finishing your 1st (or 43rd) triathlon. Talk about your disappointments and celebrate your successes. And definitely laugh at yourself when you do something incredibly ridiculous such as accidentally coloring your hair purple. Sharing more is authentic This wont destroy your personal brand. In my experiences, sharing more of yourself will actually help it! From all I post online, I get the best responses when I let people in. They laugh when I accidentally dye my hair, or get confused ordering pizza in a strange land and end up with hot peppers instead of pepperoni. They cheer with me when something great happens, and lend support when Im having a hard time. People like what I write but they love my stories and the glimpses I give them into my life. Its those personal touches that really draw them into my blog, and get to remember me. And from what Ive seen with other bloggers who incorporate their lives into their professional blogging, it works for them too. When you let people in, you dont necessarily have to share the stupid things you do. Especially if you dont invoke Murphys Law as much as I do. But do share what makes you human. Give your blog some elements of your personality, let people see some more casual photos and let them know that youre human. Do this because when people actually hire, they dont work with your finely-airbrushed resume. They work with you. So let them know what they can expect. Job Search in a Recession Job Searching in a Recession The first thing I am going to tell you is this: DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE. COMPANIES ARE STILL HIRING EVERYDAY! That said, dust off your portfolio and get out your resume and cover letter. When was the last time it was updated? Is all information current? Do you have a .txt version or ASCII version of your resume? You will need that version for your online job posting. Read over your cover letter, does it still say everything you want it to say? Does it reiterate your strong points and showcase some of your accomplishments? If not, you will need to add those things. If you are unsure, send me an email and I can look it over. Your job search must be your full time job. Get up every morning, TURN OFF the news, and start returning emails. Set up a LinkedIn account and connect with old colleagues and friends. Let everyone know you are job searching. The number one way to get a job is through networking! Keep looking locally even if everyone around you tells you no one is hiring (there is always SOME PLACE interesting that is hiring). Go to local business mixers and get to know folks in your area.
