Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents
Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents Even though Floridas ocean currents are favorable for producing hydrokinetic power, no one has demonstrated commercial viability or deployed permanent turbine arrays off the Florida coast. The required systems are expensive to build, install, and maintain, and they require environmental impact assessments before implementation. The fastest currents occur near the surface, but deploying energy conversion systems there would interfere with busy commercial shipping lanes. At 50 meters, which is below the draft of ships, the average current speed is about 1.5 meters per second with a power density of 1,700 Watts per square meter, the equivalent of 14-meter-per-second winds. With maximum speeds equivalent to tropical-storm strength winds, a speed histogram skewed toward the high end, and constant large currents like the Florida Current, there is much qualifikation to generate high amounts of electric power.Researchers at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) are studying ocean currents along Floridas southeast coast and have determined practical turbine operating areas that maximize energy extraction to help create a clearer picture of realistic operation for energy developers and others interested in creating pilot projects.Identifying Turbine LocationsIn a paper presented at the 2012 OMAE conference in Rio de Janeiro, Ph.D. student Alana Duerr, who recently graduated, and Dr. Manhar Dhanak in FAUs Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, describe how they assessed the tauglichkeit of the Florida Current. They used a computer ocean model and observations over two years of speed and current direction from Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. Based on their analysis, they have developed a procedure to identify ideal turbine locations for arrays to extract hydrokinetic energy, and estimate the amount of power that could be extracted.Rendering of an underwater turbine generating energy from the Fl orida Current.People typically use similar procedures, based on predictions of computer ocean models, to assess resources for other forms of ocean energy, such as ocean thermal energy, involving exploitation of the temperature difference between the warmer surface waters and cooler waters in deep waters, says Dhanak. The Florida Current mainly flows northward and the ocean floor can be up to 800 meters deep. Current speeds vary with depth, as well as season, spatial locations, latitude, and the amount of turbulence. Currents in the coastal areas may also reverse direction at different times of day. Duerr has created a method that estimates the hydrokinetic power resources which vary over time with the variation in current speed seasonally and with location. In general, the average maximum available power resource across a given latitude in the Straits of Florida ranges from 5,000 to 20,000 MW. Locations with high variability are typically less preferable for turbine installation. The research identified ideal turbine locations within the Currents core, a region with the highest current speeds and therefore significant amounts of power to harvest. The core hugs the shoreline in some areas and is located further offshore in others. It occurs at various depths, ranging from the surface to several hundred meters below.Extracting PowerRegions that contain both high hydrokinetic power and high power densities, two factors not necessarily well correlated along Floridas coast, define the core boundaries in terms of distance from the shore. After identifying boundaries, Duerr evaluated various scenarios for the number of turbines to include in an array and their siting locations to estimate how much power an array can extract.Duerr constructed a method for developing a cost-benefit analysis for siting turbine locations, and considered power, power density, distance from the shore, and depth at the core as the most important factors. As the first two factors increase, the y reduce the overall cost, and as the second two increase, power cable and mooring installations become more expensive and complicated to install and raise the overall cost.Using an example evaluation that assumes equal weighting of each factor, Duerr assesses potential sites. In practice, if a developer considers power or power density impacts the economic viability of a turbine array more than the distance from shore and installation depth, then higher weighting factors would be assigned to the former than the latter. The best turbines to use are ones that have low cut-in speeds, or initial speeds needed to generate useful power, and large diameters. By including these as additional model parameters, Duerr found that arrays with large numbers of turbines are needed to extract reasonable and environmentally viable portions of the maximum available power. The number of turbines in an array depends on their schriftart and size. There is an optimal array size to consider. The more turbi nes are installed, the greater the power extracted, but can make each turbine in the array less effective due to interaction between turbines and the lower the extraction rate. The only way to determine what type of turbine to employ in a specific array is to compare the acquisition, operating, and maintenance costs of each, Duerr says.Using this inexpensive, efficient method to locate potential turbine arrays is a first step toward understanding the costs and benefits of realizing ocean current energy off the coast of Florida. But, most importantly, Dhanak says, the procedure can be applied to other major currents to assess hydrokinetic power resources anywhere in the world. Theyre continuing to see how this scheme could be applied elsewhere.Debbie Sniderman is CEO of VI Ventures LLC, a technical consulting company. The only way to determine what type of turbine to employ in a specific array is to compare the acquisition, operating, and maintenance costs of each.Dr. Manhar Dhanak, De partment of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, Florida Atlantic University

Among ASMEs fruchtwein widely applied technical standards, Y14.5-2009 provides definitions, symbols, rules, and guidelines pertaining to the numerous geometric characteristics essential for drafting a nd designing products and systems.Applied today in industries ranging from aerospace to construction, ASMEs Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard presents the essential language for mechanical engineering drawings, enabling engineers and drafters to specify the maximum tolerances required for the function of a final product in its assembled state. Users have applied the standard for cost savings as well as to ensure efficiencies in the supply chain. The webinar will be hosted by Rob Jensen, dimensional standards compliance manager and GDT product owner at Metrology Software Inc., a division of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. Jensen is also chair of the ASME Y14.5.1 Subcommittee and is a member of H213, Y14, Y14.5 and US TAG to ISO TC/213. The webinar will also feature Fred Constantino, project engineering advisor at ASME, as a presenter.Topics to be covered during the webinar include geometric tolerances vs. plus and minus tolerances datum features with modifiers providing additional tolerance GDT as an international language that provides concise specifications, with one interpretation to ensure correlation with suppliers globally and parts that meet functional requirements and GDT standards supported by PC-DMIS measurement software. The webinar will describe how engineers can capitalize on the many benefits of GDT, Jensen said. GDT is especially important today, as multinational corporations with manufacturing operations spread worldwide must work from a common design language to ensure that parts produced globally meet the functional requirements of the final product. To register for the free webinar, visit https//shop.asme.org/Registrations/Conference/GDTDEC17.ASME also offers a certification program linked to Y14.5, which provides a means for distinguishing the qualifications and breadth of knowledge of the engineer. The Impact of Body Image Advertising
The Impact of Body Image AdvertisingThe Impact of Body Image AdvertisingBody image is the mental image a person has of their appearance especially as it relates in comparison to the bodies of others. Advertising is often a reflection of pop culture and societal trends however, it can also shape them. Over the last 20-30 years, we have witnessed a strong correlation between advertising and body image, and the effects can be devastating. While it mostly affects women and girls, men and boys are not immune. Body Image Statistics Here are some statistics from Joel Millers article on media and body image that may be shocking to read On average, most models weigh 23%less than the average woman. Twenty years ago, this difference welches a mere 8%.Problems with eating disorders have increased over 400% since 1970.Only 5%of US women fit the body type popularly portrayed in todays advertising.Sixty-nine percentof girls concurred that models found in magazines had a major influence on their concept of what a perfect body shape should look like. Unilevers Unique Approach Dove, a Unilever brand, has made great attempts to portray women realistically. Despite their efforts to counter the growing body image problem, it is painfully obvious that most ad campaigns still portray women and men as physically perfect, with semi-naked women showing not an ounce of fat and semi-naked men having the rippling physique of He-Man. The only time we see ordinary people is when they are used as a comparison to fit models or when they are used for comedic appeal this is a real problem. Responding to Aspirational Images The average ad for perfume or cologne usually contains a male or female model or a celebrity because empirical data has proven that the general public responds better to images of aspiration. Namely, Im wearing the same perfume as Mr. or Miss Gorgeous therefore, I am like them. Similarly, fast cars sexy women and men. The underlying message is If you buy this car, you can be or attract these kinds of people. The same goes for alcohol, jewelry, watches, computers, phones, and even food. A long-running Carls Jr. campaign primarily used busty models in skimpy clothing eating burgers that, in real life, they would rarely or never eat. Air-Brushing Out the Flaws Then, theres the issue of image manipulation. The physically perfect specimens seen in advertising do not exist. Even these genetically-blessed people are treated to rounds of Photoshop treatments. Every blemish and wrinkle is removed, buttocks are tightened, waists are trimmed, and legs and arms are lengthened. Most of the time, we accept it as the real image until the photo manipulation goes so far that it becomes obvious that there has been retouching. Toxic Effects of Modern Advertising This can be glossed over as harmless or simply a facet of modern society that we must accept. However, its becoming increasingly dangerous. Ad critic Jean Kilbourne spoke in 2015 about the tox ic effects of modern advertising campaigns and the link to eating disorders. Women and girls compare themselves to these images every day, said Kilbourne. And failure to live up to them is inevitable because they are based on a flawlessness that doesnt exist. With the popularity of social media and the ability to openly and freely share opinions, its mora dangerous than ever. Cyberbullying is a huge problem, which can lead to depression and suicide. While advertising cannot assume full responsibility, the role it plays in creating images of physical perfection cannot be ignored. Links to Negative Body Image The evidence shows links between advertising and negative body image and self-esteem in both sexes. So, what can be done? Unfortunately, not much without society demanding change. While campaigns for real beauty will continue to try and break the mold, advertisers will not change until the public votes for it with their wallets. After all, advertising agencies and the compani es they represent are in this for gain. Until the public responds more favorably to images of real people, very little is going to change. However, we can put pressure on brands to represent us in more realistic ways, especially by calling it out on social media. Of course, we should do whatever we can to educate children and young adults that advertising is not a reflection of what we should be but a convenient fantasy designed to sell something.

Why Recruiting is a High Turnover Industry - Spark Hire
Why Recruiting is a High Turnover Industry - Spark HireIts no secret that the recruiting industry has high turnover. Many people get into recruitingbecause they want to help people find jobs. However, recruitingis more about finding the right candidate for the job, versus finding a job for someone. This makes recruitingmore of a sales fleck, versus the social worker or job counselor position that many believe it to be when deciding to get into recruiting. Many of the challenges in recruitingare sales related and if you dont first have a salesmindset, you will most certainly dislike the job.Its a Numbers GameIts key in recruitingto know yur ratios. In order to get a placement, you have to have a certain number of submittals. In order to have a submittal, you have to make a certain number of calls. These numbers vary among recruiters and the position recruiting for. Each recruiter should track their numbers and know what it takes to make that placement.Since our livelihood relies on pla cements, that means we cannot afford to waste time coaching or advising candidates we cannot place. We have to keep our eye on the prize and stay on track.Painful RejectionJust like in any sales role, recruiters face the possibility of rejection each time we pick up the phone to dial a potential candidate.Believe me, you WILL be hung up on many times. You WILL be laughed at because someone thinks the pay is too low. You will even be cursed at AND yelled at on occasion. These are all standard expectations in recruiting, just as with sales. You must simply be able to hang up and dial the next number on the list. The KickerSo, you may be reading this and saying to yourself, There are a lot of people successful in sales who just dont make it in recruiting.Heres the kicker. In most sales jobs, you are selling a product that does not have a mind of its own. Recruiters are selling PEOPLE. True, a recruiter starts out selling a job to a candidate, but in the end, the recruiter is basically se lling a person and skill sets to a client in order to make that placement.People can be unreliable. They miss job interviews, they bomb job interviews, or they decide they are no longer interested once they reach final stages. People can also lie about expectations and desires, assuming that they just need to tell the recruiter certain things in order to get in front of the hiring manager. On the flip side, hiring managers can also change their mind or simply decide not to interview that sternbezogen candidate, with no explanation provided. Hiring managers sometimes hide the fact that they have an internal candidate who will likely be hired for the roll, only disclosing this fact after the recruiter has spent hours and days identifying three qualified candidates for the position. There is no better feeling as a recruiter than making a placement. However, recruiting is not an easy job and its not for everyone. It is a challenging sales role and many are not successful in overcoming its numerous obstacles. However, it can be rewarding for the right, sales-minded person. What do you find most challenging as a recruiter? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.Image Yastremska/Bigstock.com

8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Since the national holiday was officially commemorated in 1986, every third Monday in January is dedicated to honoring the civil rights legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The revolutionary activist and minister dedicated his life to the service of furthering racial equality and justice, organizing bus boycotts in Alabama early in his career. Given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, Dr. King grew to be one of the most visible spokespersons of the civil rights movement until he was assassinated at age 39 years old in 1968.Frequently quoted by leaders everywhere today for inspiration, Dr. Kings advice is as relevant and as urgent now as it was when he first gave it decades ago.Heres a list of Dr. Kings best quotes on how we can be better leaders in our personal and professional lives. On standing up for your beliefsThe ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others, Dr. King said in his 1963 book Strength to Love, a published collection of sermons that he started drafting from his jail cell after being arrested for holding a prayer vigil outside Albany City Hall in Georgia. On compassionTrue compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring, Dr. King told a New York City church audience in his 1967 Beyond Vietnam address, which he gave a year to the day before he was assassinated. On materialismWe must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incap able of being conquered, Dr. King said in his 1967 speech on why he was opposed to the Vietnam War.On ambitionWe all have the drum major instinct. We all want to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction, to lead the parade, Dr. Kingsaid in his address to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on August 16, 1967. And the great issue of life is to harness the drum major instinct. It is a good instinct if you dont distort it and pervert it. Dont give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be the first in love. I want you to be the first in moral excellence. I want you to be the first in generosity. On educationEducation must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for ones self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda, a young King wrote in 1947 in his campus newspap er the MaroonTiger. We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. On loveI am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of a Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization. To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe, Dr. King answered when asked his advice on living in a 1957 column. On justiceInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly, Dr. King wrote in his1963Letter from Birmingham Jail.On legacyI believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumpha nt, Dr. King said in his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech

What could be the consequ ences of your actions? 6. Accept Responsibility Apologizing is not an opportunity to lay blame on others. It is also not a time to find excuses for your errors. Accept personal responsibility for your mistake. If your mistake affects others in or outside of the company, you can offer to write letters of apology to any of those who are involved. It should be up to your superior to decide if customers receive apology letters from you or from the company on behalf of you.7. Plan of Action Explain how your error will not be repeated. In fact, if you follow these tips, you will already be ahead of the rest of the job seekers scrambling to put together a resume for your dream job! Tip #1: Get Organized. Keep a folder, drawer, hard copy, and/or electronic copy of important documents. Make a list of your previous employers, official job titles, dates of employment, and job duties. Be sure you know official names of schools, degrees, and dates of graduation. Write down your skills, abilities, and qualifications. Tip #2: Chronological Resume? From most recent to oldest, it shows the order of education and employment. This is good when you have no periods without work, not many job changes, and you have worked in the same sector. It is an easy-to-understand format and illustrates stability. However, this type of resume may emphasize age too much and it may draw attention to gaps in work history. Tip #2 (continued): Functional Resume? A functional resume shows achievements and abilities, with little emphasis on dates. This type of resume works well when you have changed jobs often, if you have just graduated, or if you are looking to work in a different sector. A functional resume shows capacities and strengths, while illustrating the abilities specific to a desired position. However, it also limits the description of each position. Tip #3: Lose the Objective. What is your objective? TO GET A JOB! Previously, job seekers would list the type of job they were seeking, rather than thinking of the employer's needs. Instead of listing a boring objective, take the time to craft a career summary. This may be a few sentences in length, but it provides more valuable information than the standard objective. Tip #4: Be Concise. Employers are busy and you need to catch their eye immediately. You will not be able to list everything you have done. Think of new ways to phrase tasks and achievements. Being concise will allow you to intersperse key words throughout your document, words that allow your information to get through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). And, if you need to use the thesaurus, then do it. To be effective, utilize phrases instead of complete sentences while using bullet points for clarity. Tip #5: Be Consistent. Consistency shows an attention to detail and organization. Use single space throughout each job description and double space between jobs and headings. Ensure the font you have selected is appropriate for your field and is easy to read. Utilize the same bullet style throughout the document and be sure to keep the tone of voice the same within each job description. While these aren't all of the rules for writing an effective resume, it's a great starting point.

Improving Your Performance as a Manager
Improving Your Performance as a Manager Improving Your Performance as a Manager It is rare that any manager or executive has no complaints about his teamâs performance. More often than not, however, the more appropriate one to blame is the person staring back at the manager in the mirror. Implementing the following 12 ideas can make a big difference in the improvement of team morale and performance. Incorporate them in your work life and watch yourself and your team grow into the effective and high-functioning team youre meant to be. 12 Ideas to Improve Your Performance as a Manager To improve your teams results, you have to change yourself and take a few risks by performing differently than you have in the past. Try to implement as many of the following ideas as you can, and reap the rewards for yourself and your subordinates. 1. Create more opportunities for one-on-one discussions. It is easy to let the daily firefights keep you from spending quality time with your team members. Fight hard to free some space in your crowded calendar just to talk. Your team members will appreciate the effort and the face-time. 2. Stop micromanaging. The micro-managing boss is no ones favorite. Good people do their best work when youre not staring over their shoulder. Give them space and let them show you what they can do. 3. Change your approach to trust.Instead of requiring everyone to earn your trust, try giving it first. Your team members will appreciate not having to move mountains to gain a grudging amount of trust from you. Your team will respond to this approach by not only trusting you faster but by working hard to exceed your expectations. 4. Avoid becoming the wrinkly-shirted bridge lizard. This colorful and less-than-desirable bridge lizard is that manager who remains firmly planted in his chair watching store employees from the observation deck and peppering them with regular, and often unfounded criticism. No one likes or respects this character. Push away from your desk and insert yourself in the work of your business and learn firsthand about your team and their challenges. 5. Quit trying to be the smartest person in every conversation. When looking at your job description, no requirements stipulate that you must be the smartest person in the room at all times. Remember, it is your job to hire and develop people who are smarter than you. 6. Increase the flow of information to your team.Everyone on your team wants to know how the firm is doing and whether the sales team landed that big contract. Set up regular update sessions where you brief your team on the firms results. Make certain they have an opportunity to ask questions. A great technique is to invite a different executive to every meeting to handle the bigger, strategic questions. The executives appreciate the time with your team and your team members get to know the executives while learning about the firms performance. A true win-win. 7. Learn and live the 3:1 ratio.Deliver 3-times as much positive feedback as constructive (the negative kind). Just remember that the positive feedback must be well-earned and behavioral in nature. 8. Quit stalling on the difficult conversations.Good people want input on how to improve. No one wins when you avoid tackling the constructive feedback discussions. 9. Read more.If you are not reading and learning, you are moving backward at the speed-of-change. From industry journals to the latest business periodicals and bestsellers, there is no excuse for not keeping current with your reading. And of course, do not limit yourself to industry or business fare. Any topic or genre that exposes you to ideas, approaches, and histories serves the purpose. Share your findings and insights with your team members. Kudos if you or your team members identify ideas you can incorporate to improve performance. 10. Help your team read more.Set up and fund a reading discussion group. Get the team started with the initial few titles and then let them make future choices. Make certain to schedule time to meet and discuss the books. One human resources manager hosted a well-attended monthly reading club discussion session over lunch with pizza or subs on him. A senior software engineer substituted one weekly status meeting per month with a discussion session. Find an approach that fits your culture and schedule. 11. Schedule downtime for your team. You might have found that you unconsciously run your team like you are in a state of perpetual hurry-up. Create opportunities for some brain-stimulating downtime. Take your team on a field trip a few times per year. Kudos if you can use the field trip for some creative brainstorming in the workplace. You can regularly schedule outings with your team members at businesses (in unrelated industries) known for remarkable customer service. Then come back to the office with ideas to strengthen the teams performance. 12. Renew your vow to live by the Coachs Credo. When things go wrong, its the coachs fault. When things go right, its because of the team. The Bottom Line Managers have a tough job, and theyre on the hook for driving great results and promoting continuous improvement. There is no doubt getting things done through others is hard, often frustrating work. However, all of the work you do to promote a healthy work environment that is free of fear and unnecessary stress will pay huge dividends on your mission to strengthen results.

Guess How Many Workers Dont Understand Their Workplace Benefits
Guess How Many Workers Don't Understand Their Workplace Benefits Guess How Many Workers Don't Understand Their Workplace Benefits With open enrollment season at work about to kick into full swing, nowâs the time for most employees to put some serious thought into their benefits. Unfortunately, itâs a process that proves harrowing for a surprising number of people. Thatâs because nearly 50% of U.S. employees donât understand their benefits materials, or so reports the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, and thus are ill-equipped to make smart decisions during open enrollment. But if you think that sounds like a problematic statistic, wait - it gets worse. In a 2017 Aflac study , 74% of workers revealed that there are at least some components of their benefits they donât understand. Furthermore, 92% of workers say they simply choose the same benefit year after year rather than attempt to navigate their options. If the idea of selecting your benefits this season is enough to make you sweat, here are some tips for getting through open enrollment and making the best choices. Itâs hard to choose the right health insurance plan if you donât understand its terms. Before you attempt to select your coverage (or, worse yet, resign yourself to your current plan, even if itâs not serving your needs), read up on what all that lingo actually means. Your premium , for example, is the amount you pay for the privilege of having health insurance, kind of the same way you pay a monthly membership for access to your gym. Your deductible , meanwhile, is the amount youâll need to pay out of pocket before your insurance company starts paying for your services. Then thereâs your copay , which is the amount youâll be responsible for paying each time you receive medical treatment or fill a prescription once your deductible has been met. Understanding these terms is important, because they can help you make a critical financial decision. Itâs often the case that insurance plans with lower premiums come with higher deductibles, and vice versa. So while you might think youâre saving money by signing up for a low-cost plan, you could end up spending more out of pocket if you wind up using that insurance a lot during the year. And thatâs certainly not ideal. Many people pass up benefits like flexible spending accounts (FSAs) simply because they donât understand how they work. But if you typically spend money on medical expenses or child care, it pays to sign up for one of these accounts. Thatâs because the money you fund your account with goes in on a pretax basis, thus allowing you to use tax-free dollars to pay for the things you know you need. FSAs come in two varieties: healthcare and dependent care. For the former, you can contribute up to $2,600 a year. For the latter, the limit is $5,000. Now letâs say you typically rack up precisely $2,600 in healthcare costs and $5,000 in daycare charge s. Letâs also assume your effective tax rate is 25% (meaning, you lose 25% of your income to taxes). Without an FSA, youâd pay $7,600 in after-tax dollars. But by covering those costs with pretax dollars, youâll automatically save yourself $1,900. Now the only catch with FSAs is that once you decide how much to contribute to your account, you canât go back and change that allocation unless you experience a qualifying life event during your plan year, such as getting married or having a child. This means that youâll need to carefully estimate your spending needs, because if you overfund your account, youâll forfeit whatever amount is left in it by the time your plan year comes to a close. But if you allocate just the right amount to your account, youâll end up benefiting tremendously. Open enrollment can be a daunting process, so why go it alone? If the information your company provides doesnât suffice in helping you make an informed decision, ask for further clarity. This might mean sitting down with an HR person or petitioning your employer to bring in an outside expert who can walk you and your colleagues through your options. In the above-referenced Aflac survey, 48% of workers say theyâd like the option to speak with an expert about their benefits, so if that choice isnât immediately made available to you, request it. Selecting your workplace benefits shouldnât be a stressful process. If youâre dreading open enrollment, read up on how health insurance works, learn more about your potential tax benefits, and speak up if your employer isnât providing adequate information. This way, youâll be in the best position to make the right choices. The $16,122 Social Security bonus you could be missing If youâre like most Americans, youâre a few years (or more) behind on your retirement savings. What to do after being rejected for a position you really wanted
What to do after being rejected for a position you really wanted What to do after being rejected for a position you really wanted When you fail to get the job you really want, donât fret, there are steps you can take to stop a downward spiral. Hereâs what to keep in mind.Take action: Get some insight from the employerYou might just get the clarity you need.Laura Garnett, a performance strategist at Garnett Consulting, writes in Inc. that you should âask for feedback on why you didnât make the cut.âAfter writing about how to ask the employer this professionally (your tone matters), she writes:âSome questions to ask can be: How did you perceive my strengths? At what point in the process did you realize I was not the right fit for the job? âWould you see me better suited for a different department? You may learn that you are leaving a different impression on people than you intend. Or that you were missing something that was required for this particular role.âDonât lash outItâs not the end of the world, so donât make the employer think youâre falling apart.NaBeela Washington, founder and Head Strategist of Prae Agency, and Social Media Communications Manager for Work It Daily, writes on the site that you should âavoid displacing angerâ if you donât get the job because âyouâre not the ideal candidate.ââNever communicate with a recruiter, hiring manager, or anyone else in the hiring process while under the influence of anger. You may say something that could damage your reputation and cripple your career. Itâs okay to feel hurt after putting in time for a job or opportunity you really wanted. But after the hurt, itâs best to just let it go. You arenât your feelings, but you are your work, so make those rejections count, and keep it moving! You wonât always be the ideal candidate, but donât let it stop you from shining elsewhere!â Donât turn your emotions on yourselfArnie Fertig, founder and CEO of JobHunterCoach, writes in U.S. News World Report that you shouldnât âtake it personally.âAfter mentioning how you usually donât know much about the other candidates and what they bring to the table, among other points, he continues:âIt might be that the person who gets the job has just a bit more experience doing some key element of the role. Maybe the position is âhard-wiredâ for someone who already works at the company. Alternatively, it might be that you are already at the company and the boss feels the need to bring in some âfresh blood.â When you take the rejection personally, you prevent yourself from figuring out what really is going on and moving ahead in a businesslike way to concentrate on nailing your next opportunity.âRemember the good timesMelody Wilding, an executive coach and social worker who teaches at CUNY Hunter College, writes in The Muse that you should âbuild stronger job esteem.ââIf you find yourself constantly downplaying your accomplishments and feeling like a failure, create a list of âbragging rights.â Log all of your accomplishments and contributions, and develop three key stories about times when you overcome an obstacle in the past. You might talk about when you stepped up to lead a project, how you landed new business or even the skills you used to resolve a sticky office situation.âWilding then writes about how this could make you feel and how it could help in a future interview.

Breaking the Rules to Find Your Perfect Job
Breaking the Rules to Find Your Perfect Job Breaking the Rules to Find Your Perfect Job In your career, things dont always work out the way you plan them to. I first learned this lesson myself in college. I went to one of those fancy private schools to study computer engineering in the late 90s. I knew that an investment in such a degree would guarantee me a job â" and not just any job, but a great-paying job â" when I graduated. I couldnt have been more wrong. The dot-com crash came along right in the middle of my studies, putting a halt on hiring in the industry. Even the recruiters who normally came to our school to scout out students canceled their visits. It was a situation Id never seen before and couldnt have predicted. This experience took me down the path of finding my transferrable skills and learning about new careers. I also learned how to interview for all sorts of jobs in many different industries â" and I got over my fear of reaching out to strangers. This was a skill set I developed out of survival; I needed to pay the rent. I know it sounds strange, but when you learn to approach job interviews from a different angle, they become less scary and much more interesting. I looked at (and continue to look at) interviewing as a chance to make new professional contacts and learn about new jobs. I see interviews as networking meetings, not as opportunities to be rejected by strangers. Another benefit of this new skill set and outlook is I no longer care as much if I meet every little minimum requirement listed in a job description. You know why? Because, truth be told, many employers dont really care if you do. If an employer brings you in for an interview, its because they think you can do the job. Why not submit your application and let them decide? If we could all spend a little less time worrying about being the perfect candidate and a little more time just being the best candidates we can be, wed all go a little further, faster. When I learned this lesson, my own career path changed dramatically. I went from being an engineer to a project manager, and then from a project manager to a digital marketing executive. Now, Im a career coach. I could have never guessed in the 90s that my career path would have been so winding. I was recently invited to share my story of career success at a TEDx talk. My talk, titled How I broke the rules and found my perfect job, shares my story of not waiting for permission â" and a little obsession I developed along the way. You may have already noticed: It turns out, I really like interviewing. I invite you check out my TEDx talk below. Its my hope that you will be inspired to bend the rules in your own search, so you, too, can find your perfect job. A version of this article originally appeared in the Memphis Daily News. When Did You Know You Were Rich
When Did You Know You Were Rich When Did You Know You Were Rich Warren Buffettâs answer to âWhen did you know you were rich?â is as good as it gets! Many thanks to @BrattleStCap for this tweet earlier this yearâ¦Itâs worth letting Warren Buffett give his answer at length in his own voice:âI really knew I was rich when I had $10,000. I knew a long time ago that I was going to be doing something I loved doing with people that I loved doing it with. In 1958, I had my dad take me out of the will, as I knew I would be rich anyway. I let my two sisters have all the estate.I bet we all in this room live about the same. We eat about the same and sleep about the same. We pretty much drive a car for 10 years. All this stuff doesnât make it any different. I will watch the Super Bowl on a big screen television just like you. We are living the same life. I have two luxuries: I get to do what I want to do every day and I get to travel a lot faster than you.You should do the job you love whether or not you are getting paid for it. Do the job you lov e. Know that the money you will follow. I travel distances better than you do. The plane is nicer. But that is about the only thing that I do a whole lot different.I didnât know my salary when I went to work for Graham until I got his first paycheck. Do what you love and donât even think about the money. I will take a trip on Paul Allenâs Octopus ($400M yacht), but wouldnât want one for myself. A 60 man crew is needed. They could be stealing, sleeping with each other, etc. Professional sports teams are a hassle, especially when you have as much money as him. Fans would complain that you arenât spending enough when the team loses. If there is a place that is warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and you do what you love doing, you will do fine. Youâre rich if you are working around people you like. You will make money if you are energetic and intelligent. This society lets smart people with drive earn a very good living. You will be no exception.âSo at this year-end time of reflection, letâs remember that the most important thing in your life for 2016 is to be around people you like, doing what you enjoy doing.Have a great week, Readers!Iâm rooting for you,p.s. Why you should actually hold more grudges in life and your career
Why you should actually hold more grudges in life and your career Why you should actually hold more grudges in life and your career When it comes to holding grudges, I have everything going for me. First of all, I am a Scorpio which apparently means I am genetically predisposed to being mad at you (FOR YEARS) at even the slightest offense. I am also super sensitive so it is relatively easy to hurt my feelings, meaning a grudge isnât hard to come by. Iâm also a WASP which means I have been bred to hold on to anger for years and hide it neatly under my J.Crew cardigan and wash it down with a Pinot Grigio. To quote Angela from The Office, âI donât back down. My sister and I used to be best friends. And we havenât spoken in sixteen years, over some disagreement I donât even remember. So, yeah, Iâm pretty good.âAnd though I havenât shared this with many until now, I find that my grudges are a great source of energy (like spin class-level energy.) A grudge is my own personal invisible Green Lantern Ring (though I imagine it would emit red light.) I hold on to it tightly until it becomes a part of my DNA. As the great Liane Moriarity wrote in Big Little Lies, ââThey say itâs good to let your grudges go, but I donât know, Iâm quite fond of my grudge. I tend it like a little pet.âNow even though I do like my secret grudge fuel, I am ashamed of it at the same time. And I know that deep down that holding on to these feelings and letting them fester and then occasionally delivering a 10-minute alcohol-fueled monologue called âWhy I will never forgive (insert horrible personâs name who done me wrong)â to an unwilling audience, is not the way to handle them. But according to a new and excellent book called How to Hold a Grudge by Sophie Hannah, grudges actually have transformative powers in all aspects of your life and donât need to bring shame on you. When Hannah told people she was writing a book about grudges from a positive/self-help perspective some people poo-pooed it even going so far as to call it âeccentric.â But at the same time, many people called it brilliant. Those are clearly the people who also enjoy their grudges.âA lot of people went, âI love my grudges,â they were clearly full of much more positive energy than the ones who turned their noses at ever having a grudge,â Hannah said. âI think how you react to this depends on whether youâre willing to accept that you occasionally have negative feelings and everything isnât sweetness and light in a rainbow and daisies kind of way. I feel very honestly that it is quite hard to go through life and never have a grudge at all. I also donât think itâs desirable.âGrudges can be very positiveWhen Hannah, a celebrated crime novelist from England, began researching the book she was surprised to find that there was nothing really written on the subject (unless you count How the Grinch Stole Christmas as a book about grudges.) âI just couldnât believe that because they are such a common and psychological phenomenon. They are a really central part of the huma n experience like love and hate and forgiveness. All of these things there are hundreds of books about,â she told Ladders.Hannah also pointed out that people who tend to be very detailed and aware of your surroundings tend to hold more grudges. After all, if you arenât paying attention to the world around you, you arenât going to notice when someone is doing a major injustice like borrowing your stapler and never returning it. But because you have a grudge story now you know not to lend that person your possessions.âI argue in the book that holding grudges doesnât have to mean you are full of negative feelings. For me, holding a grudge in the right way enables me to get rid of negative feelings but not through having repressed them or denied them,â Hannah said. If Gordon Gekko could say greed was good, then why canât the same be said of grudges?Grudges are an evolutionary toolHannah argues that a grudge should really be viewed and used as a tool to evolve as a person. You need to give yourself a grudge story and allow it to be a living thing. She suggests writing down the grudge.âWhat happens is that by giving myself that permission or validation to hold a grudge which essentially means saying to myself âThat was not okay. That behavior was not acceptable and I am going to form a judgment in my mind about that behavior. Iâm going to create my grudge and Iâm going to use it to benefit me and protect me in any way that I can. And in doing that you create a commemorative symbolic grudge story,â Hannah said. âIf you do that and honor your own experience and judgment in the situation then what you find is that the negative emotions donât feel the need to linger because it has been dealt with in a way that you feel is fair. You are now going to use it to improve your life. Thereâs nothing to feel bitter about.âSince I started doing it really consciously my actual negative feelings in grudge situations are barely noticeable. Once you s tart doing that you are in the business of doing something creative and productive.âYour grudges will become artifactsIt almost sounds counterintuitive but a grudge, if you hold and process it in the right way (follow the Grudge-fold path as she has labeled it), enables you to be more âfar more forgiving and less full of anger.â But you have to take the proper steps in order to create the judge.âDonât put pressure on your negative feelings to go. Consciously say to these feelings, âI totally get why youâre here and youâre welcome to stay as long as you like. Make yourselves at home. Youâve got every right to be here. Validate them and then they will stay as long as you want them too,â Hannah added. âEventually, you are able to separate the intellectual feelings from the emotional ones. So often when we hate and resent people itâs because intellectually we havenât fully processed the grudge itself.âGrudges can actually be quite freeing and make you a bette r person. So what are the steps for processing your grudge? Build a grudge cabinet. Write down the grudge (maybe in a Google doc) and then leave it alone. Let it be. Come back to it after a little time and really look at it and assess it. Literally, grade your grudge. âWhat was the intention of the grudge?â âHow mad did it make me?â Like there are definitely differences between someone taking the last slice of pizza grudge and someone stealing credit for your work. Change the narrative. Ask yourself what you could have done differently in this situation? Then ask yourself if why the main reason you are angry is that you know you canât change what happened or is it because you regret not taking action at the moment. React. Here is the magic part. Because you have validated these feelings and not just repressed them, you can learn differently from them. For example, if you have a rude or mean coworker you know to expect that behavior and you in return may be the opposite of that person. You are going to be courteous and a team player. âYou can just have your grudge story ready so you are prepared. Once you expect it, it loses most of its power to upset you,â she said. You may soon find you will be able to have relationships with people you didnât think you would be able to ever even stand in a room with again. âI am able to have a relationship with them with no bad feelings involved,â she explains. âBut there is something about them that I need to remember to maybe protect myself from one aspect of their behavior.â Forget meditation, 2019 is going to be all about grudges. How to Hold a Grudge: From Resentment to Contentment? The Power of Grudges to Transform Your Life by Sophie Hannah (Simon and Schuster) is available now.

Top 10 Reasons to Become a Dog Trainer
Top 10 Reasons to Become a Dog Trainer Top 10 Reasons to Become a Dog Trainer Dog trainers have seen increasing demand for their services in recent years, and the amount of money spent on pets is currently at an all-time high. Are you considering a career as a professional dog trainer? Here are some of the best reasons for working in this particular canine career path: Daily Interaction With Dogs (and Their Owners) Dog training can be an ideal line of work for people who love dogs. This career path affords you the opportunity to work with your favorite animal while helping other dog lovers better understand their pets. Every Day Is Different No two days are alike when you work with animals, and this is particularly true for dog trainers. No Degree Required The barrier to entry to this field is quite low, as no formal degree is necessary to begin working as a dog trainer. Many dog trainers learn their trade from firsthand experience, apprenticeships, internships, and certification programs that enhance their professional credentials. Flexible Schedule Dog trainers enjoy the perk of having a highly flexible schedule. Trainers can choose to work evenings, weekends, or regular business hours- whatever appeals to them and allows them to effectively service and maintain their clientele. Part-Time Career Option Dog training can be a viable part-time career option, allowing the trainer to keep the security of working a full-time day job while offering training services on nights and weekends. Once demand reaches a sufficient level, the trainer can make the transition from part-time job to a full-time career. Freedom to Set Fees Dog trainers are free to set their own fees for specific services, and they can earn a solid income once they start receiving referrals from satisfied clients. A trainer can offer a variety of rate plans for private sessions, group classes, home-based evaluations, or specific specialized training options. Be Your Own Boss Dog training is a great small business opportunity for those wishing to be self-employed. Many individuals have successfully launched independent careers in this field. You can also combine other related services (such as dog walking or pet sitting) and offer expanded service packages to your clients, or develop reciprocal networking relationships with other small business owners that provide such services. Many Specializations There are many types of dog training, and a trainer may choose to specialize in the areas that appeal to them. Specialized options may include obedience training, dog show training, agility training, sheepdog trial training, hunting dog training, and many additional types of training. Some trainers also specialize in working with a particular breed or group of breeds. Opportunity to Use Problem Solving Skills Dog trainers must utilize their problem-solving skills and their knowledge of animal behavior to determine what is causing a dog to act in an undesirable way. They must be able to figure out how to elicit desired behaviors and to correct any negative habits that present themselves. Being a dog trainer always involves a bit of detective work. The trainer can ask the owners for general information about the situation, but they must be able to rely on their own powers of observation to solve the underlying issues. Increasing Demand for Services There is a growing demand for dog training services, especially as owners spend more money on pet care and pet-related services (such as training). The U.S. pet industry is responsible for an impressive $58.5 billion dollars in spending according to the 2014 American Pet Product Association (APPA) annual survey statistics.
